What to listen for

If they describe something specific and a little silly or unique, that's a sign of a real, comfortable bond where they feel free to be exactly themselves without performing. Notice the warmth in how they describe it, that tells you this friendship is currently a genuine source of safety and belonging for them.

If they say they don't really have a 'best friend' right now, that's worth noting gently without alarm, friendships shift constantly at this age, and it might just mean their closest bond is still forming or in transition.

If they mention wanting to do something with this friend that they haven't gotten to yet, that's a small, actionable thing you could help make happen.
