Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Did you and a friend disagree about anything today? What happened after that?”
What to listen for
If they describe working it out, even clumsily, that's a real skill forming. Ask how they knew it was okay again, a game restarting, a sorry, a laugh.
If the disagreement is still bugging them, that's useful to know. They might need a little help finding words for what they wanted to say in the moment.
If they say nothing happened or they don't remember, that could just mean it blew over fast, which is also good news.
What this tells you
How they handle friction with friends shows you how safe they feel bumping into disagreement without it becoming a bigger problem.
