Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old

The prompt

“If you were in charge of one house rule and could change it tonight, which one would you pick and what would you change it to?”

What to listen for

A quick, confident answer means they've actually been thinking this through, that's them wanting a real say in how the house runs, not just complaining for the sake of it.

If they pick something small and reasonable, take it seriously; it's a low-risk way for them to test whether their opinion can actually move something. If they pick something big or unrealistic, it's less about the rule and more about wanting to feel like their voice counts at all.

If they say 'none, it's all fine,' that could be genuine or it could be them not feeling safe pushing back, try asking what rule their friends have that they wish was different at home.
