What to listen for

If they say something protective or loving, like "I'll keep you safe," that shows a tender, caring side of them that wants to look after people they love.

If they say something funny or bossy, like "don't touch my stuff," that's normal too, and often hides real affection underneath the humor.

If they don't have a sibling and seem unsure, ask what they'd tell a baby cousin or a friend's new baby instead.
