What to listen for

If they can name one and describe feeling okay afterward, that shows they're learning to trust that limits from grown-ups usually come from care, not just control.

If they struggle to see the upside even now, gently walk through it with them, since understanding the "why" behind a no helps it feel less like a punishment and more like protection.

If they say every no is bad, that's a good moment to talk through one calmly without defending yourself, just exploring it together.
