What to listen for

A thoughtful answer shows they're developing their own sense of self-control around noise, not just reacting to being told to quiet down. Ask them to demonstrate an 'inside voice.'

If they say almost any volume is fine, that's a good chance to playfully test out different volumes together.

If they bring up a specific moment they got in trouble for being loud, listen for how they're feeling about it rather than re-litigating the rule.
