Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Tell me about a time you helped someone without them even having to ask.”
What to listen for
A clear memory shows their kindness is starting to come from noticing others' needs on their own, not just following instructions. Celebrate that specifically, it's a big deal.
If they can't think of one, ask about a time someone helped them without being asked, and how that felt, which can spark their own idea.
If they mention wanting credit or thanks for helping, that's completely normal, you can gently talk about how good it feels just to help too.
What this tells you
This shows you whether kindness is starting to become something they offer freely, not just something they're told to do.
