What to listen for

If they describe a physical or emotional signal, "when my face gets hot" or "when I want to yell", they're already building real self-awareness about their own limits, which is huge at this age.

If they say they never walk away and just keep pushing until they win, that's useful to know gently, since it means they may need a simple phrase like "I need a break" added to their toolkit.

If they say "I don't know," you can share a body clue of your own, "I know it's time for me when my hands feel tight", modeling makes it easier for them to notice their own.

What this tells you

Whether they can name a signal for stepping back from conflict shows how much control they feel they have over their own reactions rather than being swept along by them.
