Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“What's something that makes you feel really left out?”
What to listen for
If they can name a specific situation, they're comfortable being vulnerable about a tender spot, which is a strong sign of trust in this conversation.
If they seem to brush it off quickly, they may need you to simply validate that feeling left out is genuinely hard, without trying to immediately fix or explain it away.
If they say nothing really does, take that at face value, but keep the door open by mentioning you're always glad to hear about it if that changes.
What this tells you
This shows you their specific soft spot around belonging, so you know what to watch for and gently protect.
