Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“If practicing wasn't hard at all, what skill would you want to instantly master?”
What to listen for
A quick, enthusiastic answer shows genuine interest worth nurturing, it's a window into what excites them beyond what they're already good at.
If they pick something wildly outside their current activities, that's worth taking seriously rather than dismissing, kids often reveal real curiosity through impossible wishes.
If they can't decide or say "everything," that's a sign they're more driven by avoiding the grind of practice than by a lack of interests, a gentle laugh together about how practice really is the annoying part is fine.
What this tells you
This shows what they're genuinely drawn to versus what they've just been signed up for.
