What to listen for

A proud, specific answer shows they're tracking their own independence and want it recognized, this is exactly the kind of growth that deserves real, specific praise.

If they mention something surprising you hadn't noticed, that's a good sign to start loosening your grip on that particular thing, they're ready for more trust there.

If they can't think of anything, name one yourself that you've noticed, sometimes kids don't realize how much has changed until an adult points it out.
