Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“If people only remembered one thing about you when you're older, what would you want it to be?”
What to listen for
If they answer with a value or a way of treating people rather than an achievement, they're already building an identity around character, which is worth naming and celebrating directly.
If they answer with something like being famous or rich, that's completely normal at this age, ask a gentle follow-up about what being remembered for that would actually feel like, to open it up further.
If they say "I don't know," ask what they'd want a good friend to say about them at their birthday party.
What this tells you
This tells you what they're quietly hoping their life adds up to, even this early.
