The prompt

“Has a joke ever gone further than it was supposed to and actually hurt someone's feelings? What happened after?”

What to listen for

Listen for whether they were the one telling the joke, the target, or a bystander, each version needs something different from you. If they were the target, notice how much it still stings; that's a sign they need to know their feelings were legitimate, not 'too sensitive.'

If they were the one who took it too far, listen for whether they've made peace with it or still feel guilty, guilt that's stuck around this long usually means they need permission to make it right rather than just move on.

If they say 'that happens all the time honestly,' that's worth a follow-up, it might mean the group they're in treats this kind of edge as normal, which is worth knowing about.

What this tells you

Their answer tells you how safe they currently feel being honest about getting hurt, or about having hurt someone, without fear of being shamed for either.
