Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old

The prompt

“Has there ever been a fight where you could've kept arguing to win, but you chose to just be kind instead? What happened?”

What to listen for

Uncertainty means they might need you to explicitly say 'that was a strong thing to do,' because they're still testing whether kindness is actually valued or just expected.

Watch for a version where they say they wanted to keep arguing but didn't know how to stop, that's a chance to talk through how to exit an argument without losing face, which is a real skill they're still building.

If nothing comes to mind, ask about a time someone else did this for them instead, flipping the question can unlock the same insight.
