“Is there a version of you at school that's pretty different from the you at home? What changes?”

What to listen for

An honest, easy answer about being louder, quieter, funnier, or more guarded at school shows they feel free to have different sides of themselves without worrying you'll think one of them is fake, that flexibility is healthy, not concerning.

If they describe a big gap and seem uneasy about it, they might be sorting out which version feels most like the real them, that's worth staying curious about without labeling either side as the "true" one.

If they say they're basically the same everywhere, that's just as valid, some teens feel most like themselves when they don't have to switch gears.
