What to listen for

Whatever they name, music, being alone, texting a friend, physical movement, is a real clue to how they regulate themselves, and knowing it means you can protect that space for them instead of interrupting it with more talking.

If they say arguments just stick with them for a while, that's worth knowing gently, not fixing, some teens need longer to reset, and that's not a problem to solve tonight.

An "I don't know" might just mean they've never had to put it into words before, you can leave it there and notice what you see them do next time instead.
