Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If you got to have any imaginary pet in the whole world, what would it be, and what's the one weird thing it does?”
What to listen for
A pet that protects them, cuddles them, or never leaves their side often reflects a wish to feel extra safe or extra close to someone right now, worth a gentle follow-up like "does it remind you of anyone?"
A pet that's wild, huge, or breaks rules (breathes fire, flies through walls) often shows a kid feeling boxed in by routine and craving some room to be big and unstoppable for a while.
If they can't decide, offer two silly options (a dragon who's scared of the dark or a mouse who thinks he's a lion), sometimes a little scaffolding unlocks a big imagination.
What this tells you
The pet they invent is often a stand-in for something they wish they had more of right now, safety, freedom, or company.
