Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old

The prompt

“Is there a difference for you between being yelled at and being ignored? Which one actually feels worse?”

What to listen for

If they say being ignored is worse, that's a strong signal that being seen and acknowledged matters enormously to them, even negative attention can feel better than none, and that's important for you to know as you choose how to handle conflict with them. Ask for an example; the specific memory will tell you more than the abstract answer.

If they say yelling is worse, listen for whether it's about volume/fear or about feeling disrespected, those need different responses from you going forward.

Either answer is a useful data point for how you handle discipline at home, so resist getting defensive about past moments they might bring up.

What this tells you

This tells you what actually lands as painful for them in conflict, which helps you respond in ways that address what they truly need instead of what seems logical to you.
