The prompt

“Was there ever a time you could've cheated and gotten away with it easily, but didn't? What made you decide that?”

What to listen for

If they can name a real internal reason, 'it wouldn't have felt like really winning,' 'I'd have known', that's a sign their sense of right and wrong is becoming their own, not just something imposed from outside. That's a big and quiet kind of growth worth naming.

If they say they were mostly worried about getting caught, that's honest and normal too, you can gently ask 'and if you knew for sure no one would ever find out?' to see if there's more underneath.

If they admit to a time they did cheat, stay curious rather than reactive, asking 'how did that feel afterward' teaches more than a lecture would.
