“Have you ever been in an argument and realized partway through that you were actually wrong? What did you do?”

What to listen for

If they admit it happened and describe actually saying so out loud, that's real emotional strength, admitting fault in the moment, not just afterward in hindsight, is genuinely hard and worth naming as impressive. If they realized it but stayed quiet or kept arguing anyway, that's worth exploring gently without judgment, what made it feel too risky to say?

If they can't think of a time, ask about the last argument they remember at all and work backward from there.

Either way, avoid using this as a chance to bring up an old argument between you two, let them lead with their own example.
