“Has a friend ever told you a secret that was really hard to keep? What was that like for you?”

What to listen for

Without needing the actual secret, listen for how they describe the weight of it, feeling trusted and proud, or stressed and burdened, or both at once. That balance tells you how they're learning to carry other people's trust, which is a big and tricky skill at this age.

If they mention almost telling someone or actually telling someone, resist reacting with alarm, ask what made it hard to hold, since that's the real learning moment, not the slip itself.

If they say no one's ever told them a real secret, that's fine too, it might mean their friendships haven't gone that deep yet, which is just where they are right now.
