Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“What's one way you think you're just like me (or your other parent)?”
What to listen for
A specific trait, gesture, or preference they name with pride shows a strong, secure sense of belonging to your family line, they like seeing themselves reflected in you.
If they pick something silly or physical ("we both hate broccoli," "we have the same laugh"), that's just as meaningful, connection often shows up in small, funny details rather than big ones.
If they struggle to answer, share one you've noticed in them first, it often unlocks a flood of their own observations.
What this tells you
This shows how strongly they feel connected to you, and how much of their identity they're building by watching who you are.
