Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Do you think being the oldest, middle, youngest, or an only kid actually shaped who you are?”
What to listen for
A thoughtful answer, even a funny one, shows they've reflected on their place in the family story and how it's shaped traits like independence, patience, or the need to be heard, that self-awareness is valuable.
If they express some frustration about their birth-order role, like always being the responsible one or always being overlooked, take that seriously and gently, without getting defensive about family dynamics.
If they say it hasn't mattered at all, that's a valid perspective too, not everyone experiences birth order as a defining force.
What this tells you
How they connect birth order to their personality shows how they understand their place and role within the family system.
