The prompt

“Do you think it's ever okay to break a rule if you have a really good reason?”

What to listen for

A thoughtful answer with conditions ('only if no one gets hurt,' 'only if the rule doesn't make sense') shows they're developing real moral reasoning, not just memorizing right and wrong.

If they say never, without hesitation, that might reflect genuine values or it might reflect fear of ever being caught in the gray area, ask for an example to see which it is.

If they say yes right away with an example already in mind, that's a great opening to talk through it together without judgment, the goal is sharpening their reasoning, not shutting the conversation down.
