Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Have you noticed our family argues differently than your friends' families seem to? What's different about it?”
What to listen for
Listen closely and without defensiveness here, this question often surfaces real, useful feedback about how conflict feels at home compared to elsewhere. If they say it's calmer or safer, that's a strong sign home currently feels like a secure place even during disagreements. If they say it's louder or scarier, take that seriously as real information rather than something to argue against in the moment.
If they compare specific behaviors (like whether people yell, or whether arguments get resolved same-day), that comparison is genuinely useful data, not just kid gossip about friends' families.
If they say they've never really noticed a difference, that's fine, this may be their first time actually comparing the two out loud.
What this tells you
This gives you an honest outside-in view of how safe and fair conflict at home currently feels to them, compared to what they see elsewhere.
