What to listen for

If they describe a specific moment with real feeling behind it, that's a strong sign of how much belonging matters to them, and how much a small gesture of inclusion can shift their whole day or mood. Notice who included them, a peer, a sibling, an adult, since that tells you where their sense of belonging currently comes from most.

If they can't think of an example, ask about the opposite, a time they weren't included and how that felt, since the contrast can surface the same insight from another angle.

If they mention wanting to be the one who includes others more, that's worth encouraging warmly; it shows the lesson is already turning into a value.
