“How do you feel about having to ask permission for little things, like snacks or going to a friend's yard? Does that feel normal or annoying?”

What to listen for

If they say it's mostly fine, that's a sign the current level of independence feels roughly right for them. If it feels annoying or babyish to them, listen for whether it's about the actual restriction or about the feeling of being constantly checked on, those need different responses from you.

If they propose specific things they think they could handle without asking, take that as a genuine opening for negotiation rather than dismissing it as kids always wanting more.

If they say they don't mind because it feels safe to check in, that's worth naming warmly, some kids genuinely find comfort in that structure, not just constraint.
