What to listen for

If they can name a specific moment or setting, that's a strong sign that home currently offers them a genuine place to just be, without needing to manage how they come across. Pay attention to who else is present in that moment, it tells you which relationships currently feel the safest and most unguarded.

If they hesitate or say they're not sure, gently ask if there's anywhere at all they feel that way, even outside the family, to understand whether this is about home specifically or something broader.

If the answer involves solitude (their room, alone time), that's valid too, needing to be alone to feel like themselves is completely normal and not a sign of anything being wrong.
