Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Was there ever a time being patient with yourself helped you actually learn something?”
What to listen for
If they can describe giving themselves room to be bad at something before getting better, that's a major sign of a healthy inner voice, they're learning to be their own encourager instead of their own critic.
Listen for whether they credit anyone else's words for helping them stay patient, that tells you whose voice is currently shaping how they talk to themselves when things are hard.
If they say they're never patient with themselves, that's important to hear without fixing it immediately, just naming it back to them ("so you're pretty hard on yourself") can be the most useful response.
What this tells you
This shows you how kind or harsh their internal voice is becoming as they grow.
