What to listen for
If they describe acceptance, consistency, or people looking out for each other, they're articulating exactly what they need from the groups they're part of, that's worth reflecting back to them as insight, not just opinion.
If they mention a specific place, a team, a group chat, a class, where they feel that safety, ask a little more about it; they need to know you're genuinely curious about their world, not just testing their values.
If they describe the opposite, a place that doesn't feel safe, listen without jumping to fix it, they need to feel heard first.
