Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Is there a talent you hope to keep getting better at for years and years?”
What to listen for
If they name something specific with real commitment in their voice, that's a sign of a budding sense of identity forming around this skill, worth nurturing with real time and resources, not just praise.
Listen for whether their motivation is about loving the activity itself or about how good it makes them look to others, both are normal, but the first is a more durable foundation for sticking with it long term.
If they can't name one, ask what they've enjoyed getting better at recently, even a little, the seed might already be there without a big label on it yet.
What this tells you
This shows you what part of themselves they're hoping to grow into over the long run.
