What to listen for

If they can name a strategy that's actually theirs, counting, walking away, drawing, talking to themselves, that's a big sign of growing self-reliance in handling big feelings, and it deserves real recognition.

Listen for where they learned it: did they invent it themselves, or did someone show them? Either is good, but knowing the source tells you who's been a helpful model for them.

If they say nothing really calms them down yet, that's valuable to know, it means this is an area where they could use your help building a toolkit, not a personal failing.
