Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Was there ever a time you had to lead a group even though it felt uncomfortable?”
What to listen for
If they can describe pushing through the discomfort, that's a genuine sign of growing confidence, they're learning that leadership doesn't require feeling ready, just willing to try.
Listen for how they felt about being in charge afterward, proud, relieved it's over, wanting to do it again, since that tells you whether leadership is becoming a comfortable role for them or still feels like a costume.
If they've never led a group, ask if there's a role they'd want to try leading, the answer shows where their confidence is quietly ready to stretch.
What this tells you
This shows you how ready they feel to step into responsibility even when it's uncomfortable.
