Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Was there ever a time you chose to be gentle with someone who was struggling, even when it would've been easy to be harsh?”
What to listen for
If they can recall a specific instance, that's a strong sign of a developing capacity for real empathy, choosing gentleness on purpose, rather than by default, shows genuine character.
Listen for whether they had to fight an instinct to be harsh (maybe frustration, maybe wanting to laugh), noticing and naming that internal struggle shows they understand kindness is sometimes a choice, not just a feeling.
If nothing comes to mind, ask what usually makes it hard for them to be gentle when someone's struggling, that reveals just as much about their honest instincts.
What this tells you
This shows how strongly their instinct toward kindness is developing, even when it takes real effort.
