Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Be honest, just between us, is there a house rule you've broken and not gotten caught for?”
What to listen for
A playful, honest confession shows real trust that this conversation is safe and won't turn into a punishment ambush, protect that trust by keeping your reaction light.
If they seem nervous even asking whether it's safe to answer, reassure them clearly that this is a no-consequences amnesty question, the goal is honesty, not catching them out.
If they insist they've never broken a rule, smile and let it go, some kids genuinely haven't, and pushing too hard undercuts the safe, low-stakes spirit of the question.
What this tells you
This shows you whether your child believes honesty with you is truly safe, even about their own missteps.
