What to listen for

If they share the story readily, they trust you won't punish the honesty itself, even if the truth wasn't great news, that trust is exactly what keeps kids choosing truth over cover-ups.

If they seem proud but a little surprised nothing bad happened as a result, it means being honest with you is still a bit of a gamble in their mind, a good moment to say plainly that honesty will never get them in more trouble than the thing itself.

If they say they can't think of one, ask about a friend who's been in that spot instead, sometimes it's easier to talk about someone else first.
