Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Is there a memory of a grandparent or relative that still kind of shapes how you think or act?”
What to listen for
If they share a specific memory, it means that person's influence has genuinely outlasted the relationship itself, becoming part of how they see the world, that's a meaningful thing to hear.
If the memory is bittersweet, especially if that person has passed away or is far away, let the emotion be there without rushing to comfort it away too quickly.
If they can't think of one right away, you could offer a memory of your own about that relative to help spark something.
What this tells you
This shows you which relationships beyond just the immediate family have left a lasting imprint on who they are.
