Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“How much of a heads-up do you actually want before a family plan changes?”
What to listen for
If they want a lot of notice, that likely means predictability helps them feel in control of their own time and choices, and last-minute changes feel like their autonomy is being overridden.
If they say it doesn't really bother them, take that at face value rather than assuming they're just being agreeable, some teens genuinely are more flexible about scheduling than others.
If they mention a specific time something changed and it stung, that's valuable, it tells you exactly where to be more careful in the future.
What this tells you
This tells you how much they need to feel like their time and plans are respected as genuinely theirs, not just slotted in around the family's.
