What to listen for

A clear, thought-out answer shows they're developing their own sense of fairness, which is healthy even if you don't change the rule. Thank them for being honest instead of getting defensive.

If they can't name one, that might mean the rules currently feel reasonable to them, which is good to know.

If the same rule comes up again and again, it might be worth a real conversation about adjusting it together.
