What to listen for

If they tell the story with a bit of pride, that's a strong sign they're building real confidence in their own judgment, and that they trust themselves to hold a line even under social pressure.

If they describe it more anxiously, like it cost them something, listen for what it cost, a friendship, comfort, belonging, and resist jumping in with advice; just acknowledging how hard that was matters more right now.

If they can't think of a time, that's useful too, it might mean they haven't been tested that way yet, or that standing their ground still feels too risky, which is worth noticing gently rather than fixing.
