What to listen for

If they can name something and explain it confidently, they're comfortable holding a view that's different from their group, which shows they don't need total agreement to feel like they belong.

If they seem uneasy admitting it, that might mean they're worried about how it would land if their friends knew, worth being a safe, non-judgmental space for that thought to exist out loud.

A "we all pretty much think the same" answer is fine, some friend groups genuinely align, and that's its own kind of comfort.

What this tells you

Whether they can name a belief that sets them apart from friends shows you how much they trust their own mind over group consensus.
