If they talk about fairness as "everyone gets what they need" rather than "everyone gets the same thing," that's a sophisticated, mature take, it usually means they've thought hard about situations where equal treatment didn't feel equal, maybe involving a sibling or a friend.

If they bring up a specific grievance, like a rule that felt unfair to them, let them air it without immediately defending your reasoning; understanding their view is the goal tonight, not winning the debate.

If they say "I don't know, rules are rules," that might be a guarded answer rather than a real belief, no need to push, just note it as something to revisit.
