Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“What's something small that can totally wreck your whole mood, even if it seems minor to everyone else?”
What to listen for
A specific answer shows real self-awareness about their own emotional triggers, which is a skill that'll serve them for life, noticing what tips you over is the first step to managing it.
If what they name sounds bigger than 'small' to you, that's worth gently exploring, sometimes what looks minor from outside is actually a stand-in for something they're feeling more deeply about.
If they say nothing really gets to them, that might be true, or it might mean admitting to being bothered by 'small stuff' feels embarrassing, let them know everyone has these triggers, even adults.
What this tells you
This shows you the small, everyday things that quietly tip your child's emotional balance.
