Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Is there a hobby that just feels like really 'you', like it fits who you are?”
What to listen for
A quick, sure answer shows a strong, settled sense of self already forming, something they can return to as an anchor when other things about growing up feel shaky.
If they mention something and add 'but I'm not that good at it,' that tells you the hobby is about identity and love, not about being the best, which is exactly the kind of interest worth protecting from too much pressure to perform.
If nothing feels like 'them' yet, that's completely normal, interests are still being tried on at this age, and this is worth asking again down the road.
What this tells you
This shows you what your child has found, or is still searching for, that feels like a true expression of who they are.
