Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Tell me about a time being honest was hard, but you felt good about it afterward.”
What to listen for
If they can recall the moment clearly, they're developing real pride in doing the right thing, not just fear of getting caught. Praise the courage it took, specifically.
If they describe a time they weren't honest and regret it, that's just as valuable, thank them for trusting you with it instead of reacting big.
If nothing comes up, ask about a time telling the truth felt scary, even if it wasn't about doing something wrong.
What this tells you
This shows you whether honesty is starting to feel like their own value, not just a rule they follow to avoid trouble.
