Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“What do you do when two friends want totally different things from you at the same time?”
What to listen for
If they describe picking based on what feels right to them rather than who might get upset, that shows a strong internal compass and confidence that their choices are theirs to make.
If they describe stress about disappointing someone no matter what, that's a sign they carry a lot of weight trying to keep everyone happy, worth gently affirming that they're allowed to choose without it meaning they don't care about the other person.
An "I just avoid it" answer is honest too, some conflicts feel too big to face head-on yet, and that's okay to leave without pressure.
What this tells you
How they navigate competing pulls from friends shows whether they feel free to make their own calls or feel responsible for managing everyone else's feelings.
