The prompt

“What's a way you're creative that has nothing to do with art or music?”

What to listen for

Listen for things like solving problems in a clever way, coming up with games, organizing their stuff a certain way, or finding shortcuts, these are all real creativity that often goes unnoticed because it doesn't look like a finished drawing or song. Naming it out loud for them ('that IS creative') can matter more than you'd expect.

If they say they're not creative at all, gently offer an example you've noticed in them, this is a moment where they may need you to hand them the word for something they do but don't have language for yet.

If they mention something surprising, like being creative with excuses or with rearranging furniture, follow the thread rather than redirecting to 'real' creativity.

What this tells you

This tells you whether they currently recognize their own strengths in areas that don't get typical praise, or if they need you to help them see it.
