What to listen for

If they answer with conviction, that's a strong sign of a developing inner compass, they're starting to hold beliefs because they've actually thought them through, not just to fit in, which is exactly what this stage of life is building toward.

If they hedge a lot or seem worried about how it sounds, reassure them there's no wrong answer here; the goal is just to hear what they actually think, not to test how defensible it is.

If they say they mostly go along with what others think, that's honest and worth respecting rather than correcting, you might just ask, gently, if that ever bothers them.
