What to listen for

Listen for what they've picked up on, maybe how much parents are involved, how much independence kids get, how technology changes togetherness. Whatever they name shows you what they're actively comparing your household to, often without saying so directly.

If they bring up something they wish were different here, take it as information rather than criticism, it's a low-stakes way for them to voice a preference about the future they want, including their own future family.

If they say they haven't really thought about it, you can mention something you've noticed yourself and see if it sparks a reaction.

This reveals how they're forming their own ideas about what a family should look like, partly by measuring it against what they've seen from you.
