What to listen for

If they describe writing, moving, talking to a friend, or just sitting with it, they're showing you a real coping process, they need that process respected as valid, even if it looks nothing like how you'd handle it.

If they say they just push it down or ignore it, resist the urge to fix that immediately, they need to feel safe naming it before anyone tries to change it.

If they say "I don't know," that's often the truest answer teens can give about unclear feelings, let it sit without pressing, maybe circle back another night.
